Assignments

Description:
  • The designer can create assignments for students to complete that contain the detail that the tasks require.
  • The designer may select one of two types of assignment response options: Text with attachment  or Website
  • The designer can choose if the assignment is for all students individually or if it is for
    groups of students.
  • The designer may select whether the assignment is gradable or not.
Who can do what?
  • Designers can create assignments.
  • Instructors can view and grade assignments.
  • Students can view assignments.
Tip:
  • Only section designers may create assignments for the section or course. The different
    types of assignments a section designer may create are:
  • Individual assignments
  • Group assignments where the students are graded individually
  • Group assignments
How To's:

How to Create an Assignment
  1. Click on the Assignments link in the Course Tools menu.
     
  2. Click on the Create Assignment button.
     
  3. Type in the assignment title in the Title text box.
     
  4. Type in the description for the assignment link in the Description text box.

    Note: Item Visibility can only be changed only once the assignment is assigned to individuals or to groups.
     
  5. Type in the instructions for the assignment.

    Click on the Use HTML check box only if you have pasted HTML in the Instructions text box. Or select the HTML Creator On radio button if you would like to use the HTML Creator to type in the instructions of the assignment. The HTML Creator loads.
    Type in the instructions for the assignment in the HTML Creator work area.

    Click on the Add Attachments button if you need to add an attachment.

    Note: The red arrow page icon enables you to delete an attachment.
     

  1. Student Submission Format

    Click on the Text with Attachment radio button if the student responses should be typed directly into the HTML Creator or added as a file attachment. Or click on the Web site radio button if the student needs to submit a zip file containing HTML files that are linked.
     
  2. Assignment Recipients

    You have the following options: Decide later, select All Students individually or select Groups of Students.
  3. Dates
     
    • Select the due date that the assignment must be submitted on, by selecting the date using the month, day, year, hour, minute and am / pm drop-down
      menus.
    • You may also select the check box to the left  to automatically create a calendar entry.
    • Select the Cutoff Date that the submissions will not be accepted after by selecting the date using the month, day, year, hour, minute and am / pm drop-down menus.
  4. Grading
  • Select the Allow the assignment to be graded check box if the assignment will be graded. If you are creating an assignment that will not be graded skip steps and continue 'More Options' area.
  • Select the Numeric grade radio button if the grades of this assignment are to display numerically. Or Select the Alphanumeric grade radio button to display a symbol as the grade.
  • Select the Turn grade book column visibility to ON for this assignment check box if you would like the grade for this assignment to be available to the students in their My Grades tool.
  1. Taking Back Submissions

    Select the check box to the left of Students can take back and correct work
    after submission if you would like students to be able to take back their
    assignment submissions.
     
  2. Publishing Submissions

    Select the 'Only the Section Instructor can publish submissions radio button
    if you only want the instructor to make assignment submissions public.
    Or select the 'Both the Section Instructor and Students can publish submissions
    radio button if you require both the student and the instructor to be able to
    publish their assignment submissions.'
     
  3. Section Instructor notification

    Type in the instructors e-mail address if you would like to be notified when students submit assignments.
     
  4. Click on the Save button.
